Cast comments from the Official Hero Book

Hi guys, it’s Aki again! To outweigh the amount of suffering the last episode threw into our faces, I bring you the mini-interviews with seiyuus from the Official Hero Book. Warnings: massive seiyuu moe and Morita being a giant Barnaby fanboy tl;dr the usual.

Cut for a massive wall of text. (And you can read more translated interviews here.)

Disclaimer: not a professional translator, doing this for fun, etc. Standard fantranslation rules apply.

Q: What was your first impression when you got chosen to play in Tiger&Bunny?

Hirata: I was happy of course, but also really nervous. After all, I was going to play the main character! When I got the rehearsal DVD for the first episode, I got even more nervous – I mean, everything was happening so fast!!

Q: Tell us what’s your impression of the character you play.

Hirata: I really like how enthusiastic he’s about his work and contacts with other people. I wish I could be as eager as he is…

Q: Was there a scene or episode that left a special impression on you?

Hirata: “This… is a building.”

Q: Is there a NEXT power you’d really like to have?

Hirata: I think Origami’s power is great. I wish he’d use it more often…

Q: If you were one of the Heroes in the Hero TV, what kind of things you’d like to do?

Hirata: I’d love to take part in a Soft Bank commercial after Agnes says her “Commercials, go!” line!

Q: Give us comments or your impressions on every character!

Kotetsu T. Kaburagi: Straightforward.

Barnaby Brooks Jr: Still cute.

Karina Lyle: Like a daughter.

Antonio Lopez: His failiness is good! Especially when Agnes is around.

Keith Goodman: Hero elite you can’t hate.

Huang Pao Lin: She’s cute too, like a daughter.

Ivan Karelin: A refreshing type of a hero.

Nathan Seymour: He’s the most mature one. I like him. (… Oh, please don’t misinterpret this!)

Yuri Petrov: … He’s just creepy.

Q: Any messages for the fans?

Hirata: The staff and cast were all surprised by the great response we got from the fans. Please, keep enjoying this show, because I’m sure it will soon surprise you all even more! ❤

Q: What was your first impression when you got chosen to play in Tiger&Bunny?

Morita: When I passed the auditions, more than being happy, I was just totally surprised. I was thrilled to be a part of a great show like this.

Q: Tell us what’s your impression of the character you play.

Morita: It’s really hard to describe my role in a few words. He has so many different faces to him, it makes the acting pretty hard. However, I really, really love this role!!

Q: Was there a scene or episode that left a special impression on you?

Morita: I really can’t get the “how old-fashioned” line out of my head [tl note: he’s probably talking about Barnaby’s conversation with Kotetsu in episode 1]. I really like it. Also, I like the last part of Barnaby’s fight with Jake, because it changed a lot in the series, including Barnaby and Kotetsu’s relationship. After the recording, I was so completely exhausted that I couldn’t stand up.

Q: Is there a NEXT power you’d really like to have?

Morita: There are so many great NEXT powers, I sometimes space out and just think about which one I’d like to have. But definitely, I’d love to have the power to wake up in the morning without problems!

Q: If you were one of the Heroes in the Hero TV, what kind of things you’d like to do?

Morita: I’d like to be one of the reporters who fearlessly arrive at the scene of the crime. People like them are heroes, too!

Q: Give us comments or your impressions on every character!

Barnaby Brooks Jr: I want to introduce you to some good shops with glasses.

Kotetsu T. Kaburagi: I want to become someone like you in the future.

Karina Lyle: I’d like a classmate like you.

Antonio Lopez: I’d ask you to help me with moving out.

Keith Goodman: Thank you! And again, thank you!

Huang Pao Lin: Your tracksuit is godly.

Ivan Karelin: Let’s talk all night about weapons.

Nathan Seymour: … I have some worries to share with you.

Yuri Petrov: Surprise attacks are not fair.

Q: Any messages for the fans?

Morita: I’m really happy to be a part of something as amazing as this show. To be able to live in the world of Tiger&Bunny, to be able to live as Barnaby Brooks Jr. – nothing else could make me happier. I want to learn more about Barnaby to be able to act as him to the last strand of his personality and to express him with care. Tiger&Bunny is a show created from the bottom of the staff and the cast’s hearts, including mine. So everyone, please enjoy it!

Q: What was your first impression when you got chosen to play in Tiger&Bunny?

Kotobuki: I was really happy! During the auditions, I could feel that this was a character that would suit me well, so I really wanted the role. That’s why I’m so happy to be able to play her now.

Q: Tell us what’s your impression of the character you play.

Kotobuki: I think she’s a character who never does anything halfway. You may say it’s not always an efficient way to do stuff, but I’m also someone who doesn’t want to half-ass things I’m enthusiastic about.

Q: Was there a scene or episode that left a special impression on you?

Kotobuki: There were many interesting stories, but my favourite is the episode where the characters plan Barnaby’s birthday. Everyone was acting so nice and I found it really cute.

Q: Is there a NEXT power you’d really like to have?

Kotobuki: Well, I want to say “SKY HIIIIIGH!”, too. (laughs).

Q: If you were one of the Heroes in the Hero TV, what kind of things you’d like to do?

Kotobuki: Mmm. I’d like to save people and gain points, but without standing out too much.

Q: Give us comments or your impressions on every character!

Karina Lyle: I think she’s a great girl. She’s really strong when it comes to her emotions, and I like her tsun-tsun when Kotetsu treats her in a nice way. I find it really cute.

Kotetsu T. Kaburagi: He’s very playful and kind, but sometimes also a bit dandy. I think that’s why Karina sometimes adores him and sometimes gets mad at him. I also think Kotetsu’s a wonderful person.

Barnaby Brooks Jr: I think he hides fire behind his cool act. I think he’s similar to Kotetsu in some aspects. From now on, I think that their relationship will be the main focus of the story.

Antonio Lopez: Blue Rose doesn’t seem to notice him much, but I like Antonio a lot. I think he’s a really deep character.

Keith Goodman: A really carefree person. I can’t help but smile when I see him, and his voice is so soothing, he always makes me laugh.

Huang Pao Lin: I think her boyishness is really cute. Ah, well, I guess she’d be mad if I called her cute, hehe. But I also like how straightforward she is, how she always does and says the things she should.

Ivan Karelin: He’s someone who takes photo-bombing very seriously. Even when Okamoto-san is not present at the recordings, we sometimes see Origami appear in the background. I think it’s a character that makes Tiger&Bunny even more fun to watch.

Nathan Seymour: He always helps Karina out. Even when Karina gets mad because of it, his seiyuu always tells me later “as always, thank you with FIIIIIRE~~!”.

Yuri Petrov: He’s like a one big mystery. However, because he gives off this aura of madness, I always get excited when he appears.

Q: Any messages for the fans?

Kotobuki: I too can’t wait to see just what turn this story will take in the future. Please, be with us to the very end of the very end!

Q: What was your first impression when you got chosen to play in Tiger&Bunny?

Kusunoki: Because I heard it was a story about heroes, I was sure there’d be a lot of fighting! (laughs)

Q: Tell us what’s your impression of the character you play.

Kusunoki: I think he’s an enthusiastic man. Whether he’s a strong hero or not is a different thing altogether.

Q: Was there a scene or episode that left a special impression on you?

Kusunoki: The story of the Ouroboros’ first appearance in episodes 11-13 was amazing!! I think both Jake and Kriem were great.

Q: Is there a NEXT power you’d really like to have?

Kusunoki: I’d love to have the Hundred Power and use it to bring peace to the world… Well ok, not really, I’d love to have Origami’s mimicry power!

Q: If you were one of the Heroes in the Hero TV, what kind of things you’d like to do?

Kusunoki: Saying my signature phrases!

Q: Give us comments or your impressions on every character!

Antonio Lopez: Work hard!

Kotetsu T. Kaburagi: He’s a bit dense, but strong, I admire him!

Barnaby Brooks Jr: Full of fighting power, but keeps to himself.

Karina Lyle: Be my friend please!

Keith Goodman: Airhead hero.

Huang Pao Lin: Boyish, great.

Ivan Karelin: I want you to photo-bomb more often!

Nathan Seymour: On the outside he’s a man, but his heart is one of a woman. I like how his male side sometimes shows during the fights.

Yuri Petrov: He’s a secret to me!

Q: Any messages for the fans?

Kusunoki: I’m also interested in how Tiger and Barnaby’s relationship will progress, what will happen to Lunatic… and how other heroes will contribute to all of this. I have a lot of fun creating this show together with the rest of the cast and the staff, so please, dear viewers, enjoy it with us, too! And enjoy it again!!

Q: What was your first impression when you got chosen to play in Tiger&Bunny?

Inoue: Before watching the first episode, I thought it would be some obscure hero story, but I was surprised how fun it is and I was instantly sucked in. I’m really happy I can be a part of something this great.

Q: Tell us what’s your impression of the character you play.

Inoue: Sky High is an airhead, but I think he resembles me a bit when he says really stupid things with a perfectly straight face (laughs). He’s easy to play.

Q: Was there a scene or episode that left a special impression on you?

Inoue: There were a lot of things that impressed me, but I really liked episode 5 – when it turned out the heroes are all really weird people – and episode 12, because it made me feel so proud to be the King of Heroes and I think it shows who Sky High really is pretty well.

Q: Is there a NEXT power you’d really like to have?

Inoue: I feel so jealous of Sky High’s ability to fly through skies, because I absolutely hate traveling by planes. A jet-pack would make traveling so much easier!

Q: If you were one of the Heroes in the Hero TV, what kind of things you’d like to do?

Inoue: I think fighting in the first lines would be nice, but I’d rather play some kind of a support for the heroes. I don’t really want to get hurt.

Q: Give us comments or your impressions on every character!

Keith Goodman: He’s an airhead, but cares more about the citizens than about himself. I think that’s what makes him a good hero. He’s a good King of Heroes!

Kotetsu T. Kaburagi: He’s a hero of strong beliefs and tries to do his best more than anyone else, I really like that about him! I want to learn from him how to be so straightforward, how to see good things as good and bad as bad.

Barnaby Brooks Jr: I think the way he does things is really cool~~ I won’t take my eyes off the actions of Barnaby, the King of Heroes (laughs).

Karina Lyle: I think it’s really cool that the singing idol hero actually sings in the scenario. I’m interested how her feelings for Kotetsu will develop…

Antonio Lopez: He seems like a rough character, but in reality he’s very charming. And I like the amazing impact his sponsor logo had (laughs)

Huang Pao Lin: I like the tracksuit she wears as Huang. I wish she’d use kung-fu more often than her electric abilities, but I guess it’s less effective…

Ivan Karelin: He does his best to photo-bomb other heroes, but I think it’s really great how seriously he thinks about what to do to become a better hero.

Nathan Seymour: I think he’s a smart character who could go through the worst of times. I think he could even understand Sky High pretty well, too.

Yuri Petrov: He’s like a dark hero, but has his own way of perceiving justice. I look forward to see just how he’ll cross his path with other heroes.

Q: Any messages for the fans?

Inoue: Tiger&Bunny got so popular because of your great support, fans! Thank you! And thank you again! … I see all of you predicted I’d say this! Fantastic! Really, just fantastic!

Q: What was your first impression when you got chosen to play in Tiger&Bunny?

Ise: I was all about wondering just what kind of show this would turn out to be!

Q: Tell us what’s your impression of the character you play.

Ise: She’s a character who really admires boys, I think. She refers to herself using masculine pronouns. When I was little, I had a phase when I did that too (laughs).

Q: Was there a scene or episode that left a special impression on you?

Ise: Episode 1 and 9. Episode 9 left a deep impression on me because it presented Dragon Kid’s character so well.

Q: Is there a NEXT power you’d really like to have?

Ise: I’d love to have that power from episode 9, the sniffing out lies one!!

Q: If you were one of the Heroes in the Hero TV, what kind of things you’d like to do?

Ise: I think it’d be great if I just could leave smiles on everyone’s faces.

Q: Give us comments or your impressions on every character!

Huang Pao Lin: Innocent, small big girl.

Kotetsu T. Kaburagi: Hero of the people.

Barnaby Brooks Jr: Aloof fighter.

Karina Lyle: Old enough to be in love with love.

Antonio Lopez: The good man.

Keith Goodman: Gentleman who can’t read between the lines.

Ivan Karelin: Shining gemstone of a boy.

Nathan Seymour: Deep, deep, deep character!

Yuri Petrov: A mystery.

Q: Any messages for the fans?

Ise: Thank you so much for supporting this series! Please, keep enjoying Tiger&Bunny from now on too!

Q: What was your first impression when you got chosen to play in Tiger&Bunny?

Okamoto: I’d only heard it was a thing about heroes, so I was looking forward to the recordings while imagining that it would be something in the style of American comics.

Q: Tell us what’s your impression of the character you play.

Okamoto: I think there are some points in which we’re similar, like the look in our eyes or our nervousness and shyness. But I never wear stadium jumpers!

Q: Was there a scene or episode that left a special impression on you?

Okamoto: Jake’s appearance I think. It was so scary, not knowing what he might be thinking, or the fact that he was really strong and knew no fear. I think he was a really amazing evil character. I want to know who’s stronger, him or Lunatic.

Q: Is there a NEXT power you’d really like to have?

Okamoto: Jake’s or Sky High’s power. The powers themselves are so strong, I’m just envious.

Q: If you were one of the Heroes in the Hero TV, what kind of things you’d like to do?

Okamoto: If we’re talking about using the hero powers not for battling, I’d like to keep photo-bombing. Fighting is scary.

Q: Give us comments or your impressions on every character!

Ivan Karelin: Just a bit of advice, but how about actually saying something when you photo-bomb people?!

Kotetsu T. Kaburagi: I want to become a man with strong beliefs like him in the future.

Barnaby Brooks Jr: Be good friends with the old man please!

Karina Lyle: I think if she trained more, her ice power would be really strong, don’t you think so too?!

Antonio Lopez: I don’t really think his efforts always pay off, but please keep on fighting!

Keith Goodman: Thank you. And thank you.

Huang Pao Lin: I think her boyish appearance is her charm point!

Nathan Seymour: Don’t lose to Lunatic please!

Yuri Petrov: Don’t do bad things.

Q: Any messages for the fans?

Okamoto: It’s a show with many amazing, unique characters, so I’d be really happy if you loved them all!

Q: What was your first impression when you got chosen to play in Tiger&Bunny?

Tsuda: I thought it was a cool project, so I was really happy! I totally enjoy working on this!

Q: Tell us what’s your impression of the character you play.

Tsuda: A really cool older sister (brother?). I want to keep his pop-like image with my voice, too.

Q: Was there a scene or episode that left a special impression on you?

Tsuda: Hm, I think that would be the climax of the first half of the story, Jake’s appearance. Everything was happening so fast, I was really excited.

Q: Is there a NEXT power you’d really like to have?

Tsuda: Origami Cyclone’s power. The most useless power would be Rock Bison’s. (laughs)

Q: If you were one of the Heroes in the Hero TV, what kind of things you’d like to do?

Tsuda: To be FABULOUS.

Q: Give us comments or your impressions on every character!

Nathan Seymour: Fiiiiiire! I enjoy playing him very much~~!

Kotetsu T. Kaburagi: Very kind and cool old man!

Barnaby Brooks Jr: Cool on the outside, but inside, he’s bursting with emotions, I like!

Karina Lyle: Her love problems really bother meee… And she’s a bit cold. (laughs)

Antonio Lopez: Bro!

Keith Goodman: Airheadness explosion!

Huang Pao Lin: Small and cute.

Ivan Karelin: Too grim, way too grim!

Yuri Petrov: Mysterious!

Q: Any messages for the fans?

Tsuda: I’m really happy that thanks to the viewers, this great anime just keeps on being exciting! And it will get even more awesome!! Please, keep cheering us on! FIIIIIIRE~~!

Q: What was your first impression when you got chosen to play in Tiger&Bunny?

Yusa: When I first heard of Tiger&Bunny, I wasn’t sure what kind of project it might be. From the name, I figured it would be a story of a dirty old man and a bunny girl (laughs). When I took part in the recordings, I was surprised to see just how fresh this story is.

Q: Tell us what’s your impression of the character you play.

Yusa: When I saw the character art, I thought he looked really scary (laughs). He does some extreme things, but personally I can understand why he acts the way he does. Putting the killing thing aside, I can’t say I don’t understand why he wants to deliver justice to criminals without the sense of guilt.

Q: Was there a scene or episode that left a special impression on you?

Yusa: Not quite an “episode”, but the whole first cour was depicting different things from people’s lives, and the change in Barnaby and Kotetsu’s relationship. I think that human drama part of the show was really nice.

Q: Is there a NEXT power you’d really like to have?

Yusa: I think the hundred power is very useful. When you’re late, you can speed up, and use it when you have problems with opening a jar. (laughs)

Q: If you were one of the Heroes in the Hero TV, what kind of things you’d like to do?

Yusa: Even if they’re called heroes, they’re all very human-like, and they’re all good people. So please, try to understand Yuri, too. (laughs)

[tl note: I think he missed the point of this question.]

Q: Any messages for the fans?

Yusa: Tiger & Bunny will keep on getting interesting, so be there with us! And for Yuri fans… Keep cheering him on without fear. You’ll soon understand his circumstances! (laughs)

  1. I just wanted to note that it’s no wonder the cast are so enthusiastic, considering how well-written all the characters are. It’s probably rare that they get to act this level of drama in an anime. (And Morita needs an award… Hell the entire cast should be awarded for best ensemble at the next seiyuu awards!)

  3. 😀 Tsuda’s FABULOUS enthusiasm makes me smile so. It’s like he and Mariya Ise said the least as compared to the other’s srs answers, but Tsuda has such FIIIIIIRE~

Yusa’s 1st impression. xD An old tiger pervert and a bunny girl – oh gosh. Kusonoki’s response to Blue Rose “Be my friend!” ah hahaha, Rose and Bison actually don’t talk to each other much at all in the show, do they? Wonder how Hirata managed to say “<3" lol. "this…is a building." I don't remember this scene but XD

Thank you for the translation~! I love the cast and their bubbly happiness – and yeah, Tiger and Bunny kind of stands out with its level of planning, with the city and the characters, and that awesome script. :3 I take my cap off to how you guys speculah so magnificently btw. 🙂 I had no idea the city officially has MAPS.

  4. Thank you for the translation! It’s such a wonderful interview – I love all thoughts on each character. <:

I'm going to be a big nerd and print this out, and slot it into my Hero Book (if you don't mind)! 8D
